A unique opportunity to purchase an unusual and fun vehicle with an interesting history. The Bentley R Type was produced from 1952 to 1955 and was the last Bentley to retain the classic pre-WW2 styling. Only 2,320 cars were produced. They were essentially hand-built to customer’s orders. This one is generally equipped as standard, including the sunroof, wood, leather, picnic tables front & back, two-tone paint, two-speed self-parking wipers, driving lamp, and more. The original customer specified the 4-speed automatic transmission and flashing turn indicators.
The only modifications are Vredestein radial tires, a spin-on oil filter, and additional high-mount LED stop & turn lights. As to be expected with a 70 year old driven vehicle, there are some paint blemishes and non-operational equipment (radio, main odometer, HRW, clock, windscreen washers), but the car drives well and can still attain its claimed performance (0 – 60 in 13 secs, cruising at 65 – 70 mph, relatively quiet & comfortable). Since the main odometer is u/s, the actual mileage is unknown, but the stated mileage is an estimate based on general wear and tear eg wear on the pedals.
The leather is in excellent condition. The tires are less than 6 years old with little wear. The automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Engine, brakes and steering function well with expected wear & tear. Dynamo and water pump recently reconditioned. There is a little rust inside the rear wheel wells, but nothing apparent on the exterior body.
I drove this car down to the Grand Canyon from Victoria BC in September 2024, which was a 4,000 mile trip. I did 48,000 miles in 12 years with a previous similar car. These cars are stable at speed on the highway, and easy to drive in town with the automatic transmission. I have driven 500 miles in one day with no physical discomfort.
Sale will include a full set of Driver and Service Handbooks, Parts and Service Manuals, a good-quality fitted cover, some spare parts and some tools.
The interesting history I mentioned is that the car was owned by the popular Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen from 1964 to 2004. He was very proud to buy it because it proved that he had “made it” in Hollywood. He drove it to and from the studios when he lived in Bel Air, because it was more fun than his other cars. There are photos of Mr. Nielsen with, and washing, the car. He had the leather renewed and the car repainted in the original colors in the 1990s. He gave it to a good friend, a Vancouver businessman, in 2004, who sold it to me in 2024.
I’m reluctantly selling the car because I need the garage space for something even prettier, and The Boss only lets me have one special car at a time.
